Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and 47 species of animal star in Cameron Crowe's latest family drama, We Bought a Zoo
Jerry Maguire
director Cameron Crowe returns to cinemas with a family comedy drama
that has “inspirational” and “uplifting” stamped all over it: the story
of a widowed father who buys a zoo.
The film, We Bought a Zoo, (why mess around with stuff about Quantums of Solaces or Deathly Hallows when you can just tell it like it is?), is due out in the UK in December and stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Sideways’ Thomas Haden Church.
Adapted from the memoirs of journalist Benjamin Mee’s real life tale of buying and restoring Dartmoor Wildlife Park here in Blighty, the story’s been shipped over to the warmer climes of California for the movie. Probably for the best, zoos in rural England tend to think sheep are worthy exhibits, at least you’re going to get a lion or two on the plains of California.
Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna [The Devil Wears Prada] pulled the same UK-to-US trick with her script for Sarah-Jessica Parker flick I Don’t Know How She Does It, out tomorrow in the UK, though if that movie's blazing anything of a trail for this one, then Crowe may just have made himself a new Elizabethtown.
Matt Damon’s always likeable though, and perhaps his natural charm can rise above the schmaltz potential for this one. Good to see ScarJo in the headlines for the right reasons today too...
